Betutu is the slow-cooked equivalent of Bali’s babi guling. Suitable for those who don’t eat pork, this iconic Balinese dish consists of a whole chicken (ayam) or duck (bebek) stuffed with traditional spices, wrapped in banana leaves, then enveloped tight in the bark of a banana trunk.

The entire thing is baked or buried in a coal fire for 6 to 7 hours, resulting in a rich and juicy meat that easily separates from the bones.

Nasi Goreng is a delicious spicy stir-fried rice. It’s more flavourful than regular fried rice with the addition of shrimp paste, fish sauce, tamarind and a few other goodies.

Gado-Gado is an Indonesian salad made up of both fresh and cooked vegetables, fried tofu and a boiled egg, served with a generous helping of delicious peanut sauce. This is almost every vegetarian’s go-to dish in Bali.

7. Lawar

This is one of the best coconut-based dishes out there and is a go-to dish as a starter. It is primarily made from coconut gratings to which minced jackfruit and bits of chicken skin along with chillies and coconut milk are added. Jackfruit, along with coconut milk, serves to bring out the fruity sweetness of the dish while the chicken skin makes it a bit chewy. 

8. Soto Bakso

A classic melting-pot dish, this soup (soto) with meatballs (bakso) is another very famous street food. The spiced broth is laden with dense bakso (minced beef with tapioca flour, eggs and shallots) and rice noodles, topped with fried shallots, fresh coriander, spring onions, chili, and lime.

9. Sup Kepala Ikan

Considered a delicacy, the fish head soup consists of the whole fish, eyes, teeth and all, which are boiled in a broth to which various spices are added. Traditionally, cucumber is added to it too.

This serves to cool the soup while the broth imparts its flavor to the fish. It is usually served with fried fish and a bowl of rice. The fish is fried to a golden brown and crispy on the outside while being tender on the inside. It is succulent at best and instantly melts in your mouth.

This is a must-try in Bali for people who like seafood.

10. Klepon

These amazing sweets are made from boiled rice cakes filled with palm sugar and covered in coconut gratings. These are one of the sweetest delights that you will ever come across in Bali.
